The South Philadelphia Sports Complex, an iconic parking-lot-filled cluster of stadiums in the heart of South Philadelphia, has seen its fair share of evolution over the decades.
Beginning with the 1926 construction of the original John F. Kennedy Stadium, the complex was built to host the Army-Navy football game, being able to hold around 100,000 spectators. However, by the 1980s, the stadium had fallen into disrepair and was eventually demolished in 1992.
In the ‘70s, the sports complex began to form with the construction of Veterans Stadium, home to both the Eagles and Phillies. It was a multi-purpose stadium that hosted events like the Phillies' 1980 World Series victory and the occasional intoxicated fan brawls. But the vet, too, was eventually demolished in 2004.
The beginning of the 2000s marked a new era for the Sports Complex with the construction of The Linc, which opened in 2003 and became the new home of the Eagles. Citizens Bank Park followed in 2004, providing the Phillies with a modern, baseball-specializing stadium. Then, the Wells Fargo Center became the home of the Flyers, Sixers, and Sixers, turning the Sports complex into the iconic concrete automobilescape that it is today.Â

The future of the Sports Complex continues to come in, with ongoing renovations planned to ensure the facilities remain at the forefront of modern sports and entertainment technology. The complex's surrounding area has also seen significant development, with new hotels, restaurants, casinos, and retail enhancing the overall experience for visitors.Â
The Complex will always be an iconic destination for sports fans in the Philadelphia Metropolitan region. It is even extremely accessible by transit—the Broad Street Line takes you directly from the stadiums to Center City.
Really, the Sports Complex is so amazingly new, shiny, accessible, and cutting-edge that there is no need for a new arena in Chinatown! The Sixers have it all down at Wells Fargo–modern facilities, Federal Donuts, Xfinity Live–and should, in fact, just stay there! The Sports Complex is so lovely that all the Sports Teams should just stay where they are and not waste money building a destructive new stadium to replace an existing venue that’s already beyond sufficient! Problem Solved
